Nurse Practitioners Receive Almond Teaching Tools
The Almond Board of California (ABC) reached out to nurse practitioners at the recent American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Conference in Phoenix, Ariz. Each nurse practitioner received an almond toolkit designed to provide useful teaching tools and the latest almond science to help them communicate the nutritional and taste benefits of almonds to their patients. More than 500 nurse practitioners also attended an ABC-sponsored session that examined the link between diabetes and heart health while exploring the science that investigates the benefits of including certain foods (such as almonds) in therapeutic diets.

Stockpiling almonds at a total fruit (in-hull) moisture content greater than 7% is a risk; moisture leads to both mold growth that can result in aflatoxin contamination and to the proliferation of bacteria such as Salmonella, compromising the quality and safety of your almonds. Orchard sampling should be done before almonds are stockpiled; sample prior to sweeping or while in windrows, and account for variability in drying (due to light, temperature and canopy cover). For more stockpiling guidelines, visit the Grower GAP section of the Almond Board website.
