Growers Attend Sustainability
Workshops throughout Central Valley
Almond growers are attending California Almond Sustainability Program workshops up and down the Central Valley to participate in a sustainability self-assessment module on irrigation and nutrient management. What should you expect if you respond to an invitation to attend a workshop?
The meetings typically last about two hours and include a presentation, free catered lunch, a chance to interact with Almond Board of California staff, and often an additional educational component. Growers at a meeting at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, for instance, got a private tour of the brewery's operations related to sustainability.
The Almond Board has held about a half-dozen events this year and will resume the workshops in the fall after harvest. Growers should look for an invitation from the Almond Board in the mail or respond to an invitation from their handler to attend a local Almond Sustainability Program workshop.
Come prepared to provide specific information about your orchard configuration and current irrigation and nutrient management practices. Once you RSVP to attend a meeting, the Almond Board will send more information, including details about the specifics needed to complete the module. All answers provided are confidential.

Traceback is the ability to track your almonds one step forward, to the huller/sheller and handler, and one step back, to the orchard. If you haven't already, establish a lot-numbering system as loads are harvested, and maintain records of lot numbers as they leave the orchard, including the harvest date. An effective traceback system can rapidly identify and isolate suspect product, minimizing the disruption of processing and marketing of your almonds. Learn more about food safety issues.
