Reinvestment in Almonds and Heart Health Research
Last spring, ABC staff and agencies agreed there was a need to fund a new trio of heart health projects, with the results used for marketing and public relations in support of ABC's effort to "own" heart health for almonds. The first study, ongoing at Penn State, is a controlled feeding trial, where all foods are provided to 50 subjects, including 1.5 ounces of almonds daily, for six weeks. The second study, being done in the Chicago area, is comparing consumption of 1.5 ounces of almonds per day versus 1.5 ounces of a control snack cracker for four weeks as part of a typical American diet. The final study will be conducted in the Orlando, Fla., area over a 12-week period in early 2010, with 260 free-living high-cholesterol subjects incorporating 1.5 ounces of almonds into their daily diet.
Future issues of California Almonds Outlook will report study findings.

Winter sanitation is necessary to reduce NOW presence and control aflatoxin contamination. UC IPM guidelines state:
- Remove mummies before Feb. 1 by shaking and/or poling until there is an average of less than two per tree.
- Destroy mummies by Mar. 15 by disking or flail-mowing to prevent overwintering.
A new tool is being developed to help growers assess expected NOW damage in specific regions; the current model is for the southern San Joaquin Valley.
