New Year, New Opportunities

Christine LongDear Industry Members,

The theme of the recent Almond Industry Conference was Driving Value through Innovation, and no one does this better than the almond industry! This once-a-year event provided a venue for growers, handlers and allied industry members to come together to discuss industry challenges and to discover innovative solutions to turn these challenges into opportunities. Opportunities to strengthen our reputation as a leader in providing a safe, wholesome food, to create greater value for the versatility, quality and breadth of supply, and to become an active part of the solution to the sustainability of California’s precious natural resources and agricultural community.

As we enter into the new year, let us reflect on these challenges and consider how we can use innovative opportunities for more efficient and economical production while adhering to practices that ensure food safety. This will benefit us as producers, the agricultural community as a whole, and at the same time, will grow consumer confidence by demonstrating a diligence for food safety and environmental concerns.

The Almond Industry Conference would not have been possible without the generous support of our conference sponsors. Many thanks to:

BASF—Platinum Sponsor
Jose Borrell—Gold Sponsor
Bayer CropScience—Silver Sponsor
JackRabbit—Bronze Sponsor
Satake—Copper Sponsor

Have a productive and happy new year.

Sincerely yours,

Signature

Winter sanitation is necessary to reduce NOW presence and control aflatoxin contamination. UC IPM guidelines state:

  • Remove mummies before Feb. 1 by shaking and/or poling until there is an average of less than two per tree.
  • Destroy mummies by Mar. 15 by disking or flail-mowing to prevent overwintering.

A new tool is being developed to help growers assess expected NOW damage in specific regions; the current model is for the southern San Joaquin Valley.
