Sustainability Workshops to Include Air Quality, Energy and Pest Management

The Almond Board of California (ABC), with funding assistance from a recent USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant, is developing additional self-assessment modules for the California Almond Sustainability Program on air quality, energy efficiency and pest management.

The ABC will hold a number of workshops in 2011 to provide ongoing opportunities for almond growers to participate in the sustainability self-assessment process.

ABC’s Gabriele Ludwig says that growers who invest a few hours participating in self-assessment workshops are finding areas where they can improve their practices and the efficiency of their production, while also documenting their current stewardship practices.

“Results so far are showing these self-assessment modules not only provide valuable data to researchers, regulators, buyers and marketers of California Almonds, but also provide feedback to growers as well,” she says.

Ludwig encourages growers to continue attending workshops even if they have participated in a previous sustainability workshop on irrigation and fertility management modules.

“These modules build on growers’ efforts of continuous improvement, and we encourage them to look for an invitation from the ABC to attend an upcoming workshop in their area,” she says.
