New Aflatoxin Levels and Sampling Plan for the EU
The Feb. 27 edition of the EU Official Journal contained the new levels for aflatoxin—effective on Mar. 9. Almonds arriving at the port or already on the market that are tested for aflatoxin have been controlled at the new levels since Mar. 9.
MAXIMUM LEVEL FOR ALMONDS
EFFECTIVE MARCH 9, 2010
10 PPB TOTAL
8 PPB B1
However, the new sampling plan for the VASP program—moving from a 30 kg sample to a 20 kg sample—was published Mar. 2, which means that this new sampling plan went into effect Mar. 13. Therefore, the VASP Protocol was aligned with the new EU levels and the new sample size on Saturday, Mar. 13. For more information on the changes to the VASP Protocol, please e-mail Sue Olson or call (209) 343-3224.

GAP Training Tools
A set of training materials is now available to help almond growers educate their workers in the application of Good Agricultural Practices in the field. The training kit contains a video, complete instructor guides in field sanitation, and teaching aids—everything you or your supervisor need to conduct training sessions in English or Spanish with field workers to be sure they understand both the why and the how of orchard sanitation.
To order a set, send e-mail to ABC or call (209) 549-8262.
