Military Food Professionals Visit Almond Country

Orchard_TourThrough a collaborative effort between the California Almond industry and Research & Development Associates, more than a dozen military food decision makers attended the first Almond Military Reverse Trade Mission July 13-15 in Lodi. The goal of the event was to help develop the military sales channel by providing government-contracted food companies an opportunity to learn more about our crop and our industry on-site in the Central Valley.

Participants were invited based on their involvement in the manufacturing, packaging and/or distribution of foodstuffs for the military, ranging from field rations to dining hall menus. Companies represented at the event included Del Monte, Oregon Freeze Dry, SOPAKCO, Trans Packer Services and Ameriqual Group, among others—all part of the overall market for U.S. military food worth about $4.5 billion annually.

Orchard_TourThe event itinerary included educational and networking activities. Almond Board of California staff members delivered presentations on almond nutrition research, culinary usage, shelf stability, quality and safety. Attendees were hosted at Travaille and Phippen Inc., where they toured the orchard and hulling/shelling facility and enjoyed lunch in the orchard. Next was a visit to Blue Diamond's facility in Salida, where guests learned about almond processing and pasteurization. Back at the Wine & Roses hotel, almond handlers were invited to join the guests for a reception and dinner.

closing the gap

The Almond Board of California does not support the use of manure as fertilizer in almond production. However, if manure is an integral part of your operation, consider the following:

  • Apply manure as soon as possible after harvest and incorporate into the soil immediately.
  • Use only treated, composted manure and maintain detailed records.
  • Clean and sanitize equipment between orchards and after use.
  • Store manure away from areas where almonds are grown or handled.
