Almond Pest Management Courses November 4-5
The Almond Pest Management Alliance is sponsoring a one-day almond pest management training event at two locations this fall. The first will be at the University of California Kearney Research and Extension Center in Parlier on Nov. 4, and the second will be at the UC Cooperative Extension San Joaquin County Office in Stockton on Nov. 5.
The program includes presentations and demonstrations about the latest information on controlling insects, mites and diseases. Presenters will be from UC Cooperative Extension, UC-Davis, the UC Statewide IPM program and the USDA Agricultural Research Service. Continuing education credits will be available for PCAs.

The Almond Pest Management Alliance is a cooperative effort among industry stakeholders including the Almond Board of California, UC Statewide IPM Program, UC Cooperative Extension, pest control advisors and growers, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, U.S. EPA Region 9 and the Community Alliance with Family Farmers. The project works with growers and PCAs in five California almond producing regions with demonstration orchards that showcase locally effective best management practices.
Moisture content exceeding 6.5-7.0% in stockpiles of in-hull almonds can lead to the growth and development of Salmonella and aflatoxin–two of the industry's biggest food-safety issues. When stockpiling almonds, be sure to:
- Stockpile only almonds that have been sufficiently dried in the windrow.
- Place stockpiles only on a dry orchard floor.
- Provide adequate grading and/or drainage to avoid standing water.
- Monitor and vent stockpiles as necessary.
