Almond Referendum Overwhelmingly Approved
Almond producers have voted to continue the federal marketing order that regulates the handling of almonds grown in California. The vote was taken in a referendum conducted by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service April 6 through 24, 2009.
In the referendum, 95% of producers voting—representing 96% of total almond volume—favored continuance of the order. Those eligible to participate in the referendum were current almond producers who were also engaged in the production of almonds from Aug. 1, 2007, through July 31, 2008.

Field sanitation during harvest is critical to minimizing potential contamination of almonds. Workers should have ready access to toilets and fully stocked hand-washing stations at all times. California state law mandates that toilets are to be placed within 1/4 mile from the field work area. Placement of portable toilets should be done in a manner that minimizes the chance of contamination to harvested almonds.
