Many thanks go out to UPI, DECCO and Garton Tractor for partnering in the Kawasaki Mule giveaway at the 2008 Almond Industry Conference. Because of their generosity and industry support, Ladd Hackler left the conference with a brand new Kawasaki Mule to use in his operation. In addition to being an associate of Burchell Nursery, Ladd grows almonds on Royal Almond Ranch in Hughson.

The Grand Prize drawing took place at the conference luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 11. Congratulations, Ladd!

IPM TEAMALMOND IPM TEAM HONORED

The seven-member IPM team from the first Almond Pest Management Alliance received the Entomological Foundation's “2008 Award for Excellence in IPM” at the Entomological Society of America (ESA) annual meeting in November.

The team includes UC Integrated Pest Management Specialists Frank Zalom, Carolyn Pickel and Walter Bentley; county farm advisors Mario Viveros, Roger Duncan, and Joe Connell; and Barat Bisrabi of Dow AgroSciences.

The Almond Board of California has been a long-time cooperator in the first Almond Pest Management Alliance and subsequent PMA II.

GLOBAL IMAGE

The November Board of Directors meeting launched the beginning of a new chapter at the Almond Board of California. The Board approved a new global image for the almond industry, which was developed after significant research and input from the Board, committees, staff, and agency partners around the world. The work will help marketing efforts globally to achieve a unified almond image that can be implemented across all marketing strategies. More information on the new global image will be provided in the February newsletter.

closing the gap

AFLATOXIN is a toxic, cancer-causing chemical compound produced by Aspergillus mold, which results from navel orangeworm (NOW) damage. Winter sanitation is necessary to remove mummy nuts before budswell (Feb. 1) until there is an average of less than two per tree. Mummy nuts should then be destroyed by Mar. 15 by disking or flail-mowing to prevent overwintering NOW. Aflatoxin control starts with you in the orchard.
