APRIL SHOWERS BRING...A BALLOT FROM THE USDA
The Almond Board of California administers a grower-enacted Federal Marketing Order under the supervision of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Key program areas for the Board include industry information and statistics, nutrition research, global marketing, food safety, environmental stewardship and production research.
Every five years, the USDA petitions California almond growers with regards to the continuation of this federal marketing order program. You can expect to receive a ballot from the USDA sometime in early April. Completed ballots need to be returned to the USDA by the date specified on the ballot.
ALMOND INDUSTRY GIANT GIVES BACK
Hats off to Paramount Farms and its owners, Lynda and Stewart Resnick, for their generous donation of $250,000 to a UC Merced endowed scholarship fund intended to benefit low-income students from the south valley.
Paramount Farms, the largest grower of tree crops in the world, grows and processes almonds, lemons, oranges and pistachios. Since the Resnicks’ first gift of $200,000 in 2003, about 200 students have received scholarships to help them fund their education.
University of California Cooperative Extension and the Almond Board of California are pleased to offer an exciting internship opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students in the agricultural and biological sciences.
This paid internship offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work closely with experienced Cooperative Extension farm advisors to learn about the latest in agricultural practices and technologies pertaining to almonds and other tree crops. Click here to learn more.
Application deadline is Feb. 23, 2009.

While no federal or state regulatory standards for irrigation water exist, recommendations based on California surveys indicate a guidance level of 1000 fecal coliform or 126 generic E. coli per 100 ml of water as an action threshold. If levels exceed this threshold, (1) temporarily increase testing (2) attempt to determine the cause (3) seek professional advice to determine if corrective actions are needed.
