Are you asking yourself, “What is sustainability, and why do I need to know about it?” The Almond Board of California (ABC) would like to take a moment to inform you about sustainability.

ABC’s Definition of Sustainability:

Sustainable almond farming utilizes production practices that are economically viable and are based upon scientific research, common sense and a respect for the environment, neighbors and employees. The result is a plentiful, healthful, safe food product.

 Sustainability Program Now Online!

The California Almond Sustainability Program may now be accessed online. Through this new online system, you can now:

  • Complete modules on your own time in the comfort of your home or office
  • Apply for one continuing education unit (CEU) is available from the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) by completing the Pest Management module
  • Access your personal grower report to compare your growing practices to state averages of other growers that have filled out assessments
  • Automatically fill in fields in new orchards that are managed similarly to those orchards that you have assessed in the past.

Why Now?

We know that almond growers have been practicing sustainable farming for decades, but proving it is a different matter. As wonderful as your sustainability stories are, without documentation, they are just “stories.”

Who Wants to Know?

  • Our customers want proof that the almond industry is doing all we can to document sustainable farming practices.
  • Regulators want carefully documented records of efficient farming practices.
  • Manufacturers want to produce and supply quality products.
  • Consumers want to know that they are buying and consuming products that care about the environment, and that we care about their health and well being.
  • You want to know how to be more efficient.

How You Can Make a Difference

  • Participate in a sustainability workshop. You’ll learn about our sustainable farming modules, and you’ll generate data by completing self-assessments about your farming practices.
  • Your data can and will make a difference. The collective results from the almond community’s assessments can influence those who care about our product.
  • Your participation, implementation and knowledge of sustainable farming practices helps our community sell more almonds.

What You Get In Return

You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you made a difference for the future of our almond community. Your stories will be more than just “stories,” and your sustainable efforts will make history for future generations of California Almond farmers.

For more information about the program or how you can participate, contact Kendall Barton at or by phone at (209) 343-3245.

Thank you, your feedback has been sent to The Almond Board of California.
