Every five years, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) jointly publish the Dietary Guidelines for Americans to provide nutrition recommendations for the U.S. public. The guidelines also influence federal food and nutrition education programs. Because health professionals look to these guidelines to inform their nutrition recommendations, Almond Board of California follows the development of the guidelines very closely. The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, launched in late January, place an emphasis on balancing calories with physical activity, which ABC’s portion education outreach activities strongly support. Almonds are also highly relevant to other core Dietary Guidelines messages, including an emphasis on obtaining sufficient fiber, calcium and potassium, and replacing saturated fats with mono- and polyunsaturated fats.
