Almond Board of California (ABC) Chairman Bill Harp recently asked if I would serve as chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee (F&AC). I am happy to do so as I very much value the vital work that this committee undertakes: basically, how best to invest the funds that California Almond growers contribute to support all of the important work that the ABC does.
My first meeting as chairman was May 5, at which all of the budget proposals for the upcoming 2014– 2015 fiscal year were reviewed. ABC staff and the departmental committees were very busy preparing the programs and tactics for the coming year, and putting numbers to them.
Coming out of the May meeting, all of this work was rolled up into a consolidated budget, which F&AC recommended to the Board of Directors (BOD) for its consideration and adoption at its June 11 meeting. The budget was approved as presented.
Being an ABC BOD member in addition to chairing F&AC permits me to participate not only in the creation of the annual budgets but also their critique and review. As any of us would do with our own businesses, the ABC has a well-developed process of evaluating past performance as the basis for developing and recommending future program funding. As the new Finance and
Audit Committee chairman, I will do my best to ensure that the financial integrity of the Almond Board of California continues to be beyond reproach and that every dollar is invested to maximize grower return.
