Comment Period Extended for Proposed FSMA Rules

In response to numerous requests to extend the comment period for the FSMA proposed rules, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg has announced that FDA intends to extend the comment period by another 120 days. The comment period was originally set to end May 16; the new deadline is September 16.

“Based on our current analysis, it would be impossible for any interested party to meaningfully comment on these two proposed rules by the current deadline of May 16, 2013, given they propose such a substantial overhaul of the structure of food safety regulation; the sheer size of the regulations lengthens the time necessary for analysis,” Hamburg said on making the announcement.

Growers, handlers and other interested parties may make comments on the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (Produce Safety rule) and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls For Human Food (Preventive Controls rule) at the FDA website.
