Burning Trees and Prunings
California Almond growers in the San Joaquin Valley are subject to rules regarding open-air burning of trees and prunings. General agricultural burning in the San Joaquin Valley was phased out July 1, 2005. Burning orchard removals ended July 1, 2007, and annual prunings cannot be burned after July 1, 2010.
The ban on agricultural burning reduces emissions of a number of air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) and the ozone (smog) precursor nitrogen oxides (NOx).
