Environmental Stewardship
California Almond growers are environmentally responsible and actively engaged in a wide variety of production practices that protect the environment. Since 1950, almond growers have contributed their financial resources to addressing a wide variety of environmental challenges, which include surface water quality, ground water quality, air quality, global warming, endangered species act, pesticide risk assessment and sustainability.
The Environmental Committee (EC) was formed in 2001 and has provided leadership on environmental issues affecting California Almond production.
The Environmental Committee is dedicated to keeping growers, handlers, government regulatory officials, media and members of the public informed about its commitment to environmental stewardship. Articles appear in the Board's publication California Almonds printed and electronic newsletter.
Every year, the committee hosts an orchard tour for regulatory officials and the media to highlight the many on-farm environmentally friendly practices growers engage in. The Almond Board has been recognized for its environmental leadership by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with a Champion for Pesticide Environmental Stewardship award for exhibiting “an extraordinary level of commitment to protecting human health and the environment." The Board has also been honored twice with an IPM Innovator award by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
