Consumers love ice cream—so cold, refreshing, smooth and creamy. But what would this frozen treat be without the unique crunch and flavor of California Almonds? According to recent research reports, it just doesn’t have the same appeal.
- Almonds are the number one ingredient chosen by female consumers for ice cream bars. 1
- Among health and food involved women, almonds are the favorite nut chosen and the second most popular ice cream ingredient (behind caramel) overall.1
Almonds are the perfect ingredients to make your next ice cream creation stand out in the freezer. So the next time you’re considering a crunchy addition, think about a heaping scoop of California Almonds.
Ben & Jerry’s
In spring 2009, Ben & Jerry’s held its annual “Do the World A Flavor” consumer recipe contest, and first prize was awarded to Wisconsin resident Toni Gunnison, 40, for her “Almond Delight” ice cream creation. Renamed “Dulce Almond” by the company, the flavor incorporates caramel ice cream, praline almonds and a caramel swirl and has been available as a special batch flavor at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops in the U.S. since 2010.
Great news for food professionals! Gunnison is a perfect example of the California Almond industry’s primary target consumer in North America, “Jane,” a category comprising more than 40 million food-involved and health-empowered women. This key consumer takes pleasure in indulging on occasion and looks for products that add flavor, variety and novelty to her life. In fact, a 2009 survey that asked 1,000 “Janes” about the contents of their ideal ice cream revealed that almonds are one of the favored inclusions. According to the study, the most popular ingredients that make up Jane’s perfect ice cream flavor are vanilla, strawberries, dark chocolate, almonds and a caramel swirl – just like those used Gunnison’s winning “Dulce Almond” delight!
