Many dietary components are often individually described as heart-healthy. Because of this, a team from the University of Toronto asked what would happen if select dietary components thought to be heart healthy were combined as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Their hypothesis, based on the body of literature, was that there would be a positive effect on cholesterol levels. Therefore, the Portfolio Eating Plan (PEP), a dietary approach to managing cholesterol levels, was developed. The diet was designed after the National Cholesterol Education Program step II diet, which recommends less than 7 percent of calories from saturated fat and less than 200 mg cholesterol daily and has been tested in a series of phased studies for over a decade for its impact on cholesterol levels and heart health. |
