2014 Farm Bill Negotiations Continue
Leaders of the House and Senate agriculture committees hope to announce a deal on a new multiyear farm bill within the next week.  An agreement remains to be reached on the dairy title of the bill.  Intentions remain to have a bill to the President before the end of the month.
The Farm Bill funds many programs that impact the almond industry including the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) which sets aside acreage that has become valuable bee habitat; the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) that provides funding to help growers in developing sustainable and environmentally safe practices to meet standards as well as provide all Californians with safe food and drinking water; the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) which funds research and extension grants for specialty crops used to develop and disseminate science-based tools to address issues affecting specialty crops; the Specialty Crop Block Grants (SCBG) used to increase specialty crop competitiveness in the market; and funding of the Market Access Program (MAP) and the Foreign Market Development Cooperator Program (FMD) that have been leveraged successfully to promote almonds in emerging and established markets.
